Did Ed Sheeran Rip-Off Marvin Gaye?

Did Ed Sheeran Rip-Off Marvin Gaye?

Ed Sheeran faces copyright lawsuit over 'Thinking Out Loud'

According to Reuters news agency, heirs of the composer for Marvin Gaye's hit song "Let's Get It On" have sued British singer Ed Sheeran on August 9th, claiming that Ed's hit song, "Thinking Out Loud," copies the core elements of the late soul singer's 1973 hit-track, "Let's Get It On."

Have a listen to the two songs below. The Groove is the same, the tempo is the same, the chord changes are the same, even the key (D Major) is the same! ...Hmmmm?

The vocal melodies are the missing link, but judging from the recent results of similar lawsuits I think the lawsuit has decent footing.

Check out the two songs below and decide what you think... Is this lawsuit a major rip-off, or will it be tossed out of court...

  1. Not sure I buy this one. Granted, same key and similar groove but each song is buried in a different feel through the instrumentation and as you say, the vocal melodies are rather different. I think this pales in comparison to the 'Blurred Lines' suit, where there was more room for comparison through the scarcity of the arrangements, but clearly that win was enough for them to try again. We'll wait and see I guess!
